Eastern Europe, Byzantine Empire & Merovingian, Migration Period, ca. 6th to 12th century CE. A stunning and pristine high quality 85% gold (equivalent to 20K+) and garnet ring! The openwork band features scrolling "S" shapes, and the underside of the bezel - which is hidden from view when worn - even has fine openwork detailing! The conical cabochon garnet is set in a circular bezel with a smooth lip decorated by granulated beading encircling the base and scrolls on opposite sides of the face. The garnet is a deep red hue that appears black but glimmers a wine red in direct light. This exceptional piece is in a near perfect state of preservation and wearable - but please note the size! This ring was either made for the young child of a wealthy family, or it was created to be used as a votive offering on the finger of a religious statue. Size: 0.77" L x 0.60" W (2 cm x 1.5 cm); band opening: 0.53" W (1.3 cm); garnet: 0.34" Diameter (0.9 cm); gold quality: 85% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 3.2 grams; US ring size: 1
