Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec culture, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. This is an amazing carving from volcanic stone, displaying the stylized face of the wind deity Ehecatl - a form of Quetzalcoatl - in which he presents pursed lips. The gray basalt has nice remains of red, white, and black pigments that highlight his visage, and these vertical stripes across the eyes and down the cheeks are part of this deity's characteristics, as well as the inverted J-shaped ears, conical hat, and beard hanging below the mouth - seen here as if a pointed chin. The mouth of Ehecatl has the appearance of a blunted beak or pursed lips, and striated hair on the reverse might allude to the feathers of birds - adding to the deity's avian aspects. This sculpture is excellent and maintains its smooth surface as well as the applied paints; porous volcanic stone was a popular material for the Aztec to use for shrines and offerings. Size: 4" L x 2.75" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 7 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Quetzalcoatl - "Feathered Serpent" in the Nahuatl language - is the Pre-Columbian deity revered as the lord of air and sky. The earliest representations of Quetzalcoatl adorn the Temple of Quetzalcoatl in Teotihuacan, Mexico (ca. 3rd century CE) where numerous stone heads of the divine plumed snake embellish the steps of this Pre-Classic pyramid. The Aztecs believed Ehecatl was an aspect of Quetzalcoatl, and Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl was associated with wind and creation.
