Near East, Jordan, Arabian Desert, Acheulian, ca. 1.2 million to 500,000 years ago. This is a true museum class example of a mottled cream-colored chert hand axe from an unusual location with great workmanship and preservation. This is a classic Acheulian era elongated hand axe; not only in supreme original condition, but it also shows incredible flaking and form. The thin bifacially-flaked body has a long, thin profile with a rounded proximal end, partially incorporating the natural curve of stone, which served as a platform to distribute and cushion the pounding blows to the hand when used. The long, thin chopping tip is perfectly preserved and is complete and unbroken! Acheulean Lower Paleolithic hand axes are the first human-made tools displaying intelligent design known to history and prior to these Acheulean tools, only crude pebble tools existed in the human fossil record. This amazingly rare hand axe was originally found in the Arabian Desert in Jordan, during the 1950s by a London collector. Size: 3.4" L x 2.33" W x 7.4" H (8.6 cm x 5.9 cm x 18.8 cm)
A hand axe of this type was ideally suited for butchering large, hunted prey in prehistory. Its weight and blade-like chopping end would have been ideally suited to sever hide, flesh, and tendons. It demonstrates the skill and ability of Early Man (Homo erectus) as a tool maker, to the highest order. Hand axes of this workmanship are theorized to be prestige pieces, having been made to a much higher degree than utilitarian needs. The aesthetic is something that must be seen and held to appreciate!
