Western Europe, Netherlands, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. This is a fascinating wooden pendant or large rosary bead carved with intricate Christian religious scenes in relief on both sides. The obverse is carved with a depiction of the Immaculate Conception - the large central figure is the Virgin Mary, wearing a halo with stars or light beams, and winged angels to her sides. At her feet are two saints, and the swirling form she stands upon may be a snake. The reverse is of Saint Anthony holding the Christ child, with a background of a library or study featuring a table and bookshelf. The top is pierced for suspension to wear as a devotional piece for reflection and prayer, as well as an attractive accessory. The Dutch developed intricate wooden carvings known as “prayer nuts” which resembled small spherical boxes that opened to reveal ornate relief carvings of biblical events or saints. This pendant seems to follow this style of elaborate miniatures! Size: 1.5" Diameter x 0.3" W (3.8 cm x 0.8 cm)
St. Anthony was a Portuguese Franciscan priest and friar who died in Padua, Italy. Despite being born into a wealthy family, he was known for his intense devotion to the poor and sick and holds the distinction of being canonized most quickly of all the saints. He is also known as the patron saint of lost things - objects, people, and souls. In art, he is often depicted with a book and the infant Jesus, based on a commonly told story of him reading a book and seeing the Christ Child's image in it.
