Fernando Krahn (Chilean, 1935-2010). "Black Fantasy" acrylic paint and black ink on canvas, ca. 1980s. A striking piece by Chilean artist and cartoonist Fernando Krahn, depicting a lovable bovine creature in composite profile, with a sizeable body, a long tail, and an endearing visage facing the viewer at the lower left. Krahn's graphic sensibility really comes through in this playful composition - from the whimsical nature of the overall form to the countless, meticulously detailed design motifs that embellish the animal's body. Size: 40.125" L x 39.875" W (101.9 cm x 101.3 cm)
Fernando Krahn was a Chilean artist and cartoonist whose works were published in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Reporter, and Esquire. He fleed Chile to escape persecution following a coup d'etat in 1973 and relocated to Spain where he published more than 40 children's books, earning the SM Ediciones International Illustration Prize in 2001. After receiving a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship, Krahn made his first animated film entitled, "El crimen perfecto" (The Perfect Crime) in 1976. In 1984, he began working for a Barcelona newspaper entitled La Vanguardia, and would continue creating artwork for the rest of his life.

Condition
Some surface wear and craquelure in areas as shown commensurate with age. Loss to black border tape that once covered the sides of the canvas; this does not impact the image. Galerie Couturier labels on verso, including one also labeled Brandeis University, suggesting it was once exhibited there as well. Another label with the title of the work on stretcher. Wired for suspension and ready to display.
