Felix Arauz (Ecuadoran, b. 1935). "Nino Sentado" oil on canvas, ca. 1970. An unforgettable painting by Felix Arauz, one of the most famous artists to come out of Ecuador during the 20th century. Using vivid hues of plum, russet, and golden ochre against a white background, Arauz created this dreamlike seated figure, outlined in soft black, with a mesmerizing visage turned toward the figure's right, and an expressive pose, gesturing with both hands. The work is signed and titled on the verso. Size: 40.125" L x 30" W (101.9 cm x 76.2 cm)
Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1935, Felix Arauz' art circle included Enrique Tabara, Anibal Villacis, Jose Carreno, and Juan Villafuerte. Arauz began studying at the School of Fine Arts under Caesar Andrade Faini in 1957. When his father passed away during his second year, Arauz then channeled his emotions into his work, with colors and compositions that impact the viewer on many levels. Arauz's themes include trees of life, faces, innocent children, floral arrangements, landscapes, and abstract compositions. Each piece presents with his unique dreamlike aesthetic.
In 1967, Arauz received a government scholarship to travel to the United States with Gilberto Almeida (a member of VAN, the artist group founded by Enrique Tabara) and Jaime Villa to study works in galleries and museums throughout New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami. In 1970, Arauz exhibited two paintings at the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. and at Gallery Kromex in New York. In 1971, Arauz won The Great Prize of Hall Julio in Guayaquil. In 1987, he exhibited with Eloisa Melo in Basel, Switzerland and with Victor Mideros in Brussels. Following that exhibition, Arauz connected with his friend and colleague Jose Carreno in Paris. He became a professor at the School of Fine Arts in 1966 and still continued painting in his studio in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
