Fanny Marc (French, b. 1858)."Eve Maudite" - bronze - 1904. Signed and dated on upper base. Inscribed "Eve Maudite 2 me ebauche" on side of base. Makers mark for E. Gruet of Paris reads "E. Gruet - Jeune - Fondeur - Avenue de Chatillon - Paris". The Young Gruet (Edmond-Paul, 1863-1904) cast for famous sculptors such as Auguste Rodin and Frederick William MacMonnies until 1904; he was active from 1891 until 1904. An expressive cast bronze sculpture of Eve from the Expulsion of Adam and Eve. Marc presents Eve in a dramatic pose with her arms held before her bowed head, her long tresses of hair falling before her body, and her right knee bent and ankle raised, altogether suggesting a cowering motion as she and Adam have been expelled from the Garden of Eden. She stands atop a textured base that is signed, dated, bears the title of the piece, as well as a makers mark for Edmond-Paul Gruet. Size: 8.75" H (22.2 cm)
Fanny Marc was born May 22, 1858. Her death date is not recorded in the Benefit dictionary. She was a student of Falquiere, Barrias, and Georges Lemaire, as well as a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1886 where she won an honorable mention in 1895, a medal in 1904, and second prize in 1906. She is best known for her Monument to the Dead of 1870 at La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. (Source: BENEZIT —a 14-volume dictionary of artists)
