- Lot Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. Finely carved from marble, a commemorative portrait bust intended for a niche in a mausoleum, delineated in high relief in order to fit the custom niche. Sections along the sides of the neck and below the ears were left unsculpted in order to serve as background for the head. Given the presence of a beard and mustache, the visage likely represents a man of middle age. The head is somewhat less than life size and presents with a narrow neck relative to the pronounced oval visage. Note the gentleman's wide-open, thickly-lidded almond-shaped eyes framed by arched brows, his pursed lips connoting a serious character, as well as his high cheekbones and prominent chin, all topped by a sophisticated coiffure with meticulously delineated curls that complement his neatly manicured facial hair. Stylistically speaking, while the subject's features are somewhat idealized, they are still sufficiently distinct to convey the his individuality and differentiate him from his peers.
