**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An exquisite bronze statue of Apollo in the nude standing in contrapposto with his left leg bent at the knee, the heel lifted and his weight shifted to his right leg, his torso slightly twisted with the right forearm brought forward to grasp a patera and the left shoulder slightly back, with a quiver slung on his back - all skillfully cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. His hair is beautifully styled and detailed - rolled back at the sides with wavy locks cascading over his shoulders and down the nape of his neck. His nude body is athletic and masculine though with somewhat effeminate curves suggesting a Hellenistic prototype. Size: 1.4" W x 3.3" H (3.6 cm x 8.4 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Apollo, god of music, poetry, art, and knowledge, is portrayed here at the height of Classical beauty with not only an attractive physique but also idealized facial features - articulated, almond-shaped eyes with delineated lids, pupils, and a softly curved brow line, a slender, aquiline nose, and closed sensual lips. Gorgeous dark green/brown patina has developed on the bronze over the ages. What's more, the figure stands upon an integral rectangular pedestal and the sinuous curve of his pose beckons the viewer to admire him from all angles.
According to the consignor, this piece was exhibited at the Picker Art Gallery, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, from 1990 to 1997. It was also published in J. Eisenberg, "Art of the Ancient World," Vol. IV (1985), no. 146.
A similar bronze statuette of Apollo was sold for $10,000 by Christie's New York as lot 144 on June 2nd to 16th, 2020 ("Antiquities" Online 18699).
