Roman Empire, Imperial Rome, Gallo-Roman, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An extraordinary bronze sculpture capturing Cupid (Greek Eros), the god of love, riding side-saddle on the back of a gracefully posed spotted panther. Cupid, with wings outstretched behind him, clutches the nape of the panther's neck, exuding both control and playful dynamism. The panther, adorned with silver inlaid spots - now exhibiting a dark gray patina - raises its left paw, adding a sense of movement and vitality to the piece. The entire composition rests upon an integral plinth, carved in the form of a log, enhancing its naturalistic setting. Size: 1.75" L x 2.75" H (4.4 cm x 7 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
A frequent motif in Roman art, the image of the winged god of love riding a ferocious panther was intended to symbolize "love conquers all."
XRF tested showing item is bronze as described.
