Ancient Greece, Archaic period, ca. 550 to 540 BCE. An impressive bronze applique in the form of a sphinx - a mythological creature with the body of a lion, the head of a woman, and the plumed wings of an eagle. Depicted frontally, the fantastical creature faces forward, her leonine legs straightened as magnificent wings spread outward flanking her attractive visage with lengthy braids that cascade down her chest. This mythical beast likely once served as an attachment to a world-class bronze vessel. Truly a wonderful example of Archaic iconography! Size: 1" L x 2.4" W x 2.2" H (2.5 cm x 6.1 cm x 5.6 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Although the Great Sphinx of Giza is certainly the most famous, sphinxes have a large place in Classical mythology as well - probably because of the intermixing of Egyptian and Classical culture via trade routes across the Mediterranean. The Greek version of the sphinx, unlike the male Egyptian one, has the head of a human female, the body of a lioness, the wings of an eagle, and a serpent's tail. Famously, the sphinx - sent by Hera to punish the city of Thebes for displeasing the goddess - stood outside Thebes, taking vengeance upon anyone who failed to answer its riddle. Oedipus would eventually solve the riddle: what animal walks on four legs, then two, then three? The answer of course was man, who crawls as an infant, grows to walk upright, and in his advanced years, leans upon a walking stick.
