Frank Howell (American, 1937-1997). "Crow Dreamer Lakota Visions" hand-colored lithograph trial proof. Printed between the dates of December 22, 1980 and January 2, 1981. Printed by Master Editions (Englewood, Colorado) by master printer Bill Lagattuta. A magnificent, impressively large, hand-colored lithograph - 1 of only 2 trial proofs - entitled "Crow Dreamer Lakota Visions" by Frank Howell that is pencil signed by the artist ("Crow Dreamer / Hand Colored Trial Proof / Frank Howell 1984") on the lower left, with chops on the lower right. The title is also written in the plate at the lower right. Howell, who is among the pioneer artists of the Southwest Native Art Movement, is best known for creating meticulously rendered portraits of native peoples to convey the union of their physical and spiritual realms. The phrase Howell used to describe this marriage between his subjects' interior and exterior worlds was "the continuum of life." Size of sheet: 30" L x 22" W (76.2 cm x 55.9 cm) Size of frame: 37.75" L x 29.125" W (95.9 cm x 74 cm)
In this piece, Howell presents the veristic visage of an elderly Lakota man whose visage is graced by a labyrinth of wrinkles, signifying his wisdom, character, and experience. The sitter is wrapped in a blanket or robe, from which only his head emerges, with a single turquoise earring dangling from his right ear. A group of twelve crows are perched upon his head, serving as a natural crown.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Frank Howell studied art as well as writing at the University of Northern Iowa. In the 1960s, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, then to Taos, New Mexico, and finally Santa Fe. In addition to being a painter, Howell was a photographer and a master lithographer. He created impressive lithographs, monotypes, oils, watercolors, acrylics, drawings, and sculptures. He stated, "I believe that through the communion between the tools, materials, and qualities of lithography and my sensibilities, beauty may be born. It is that communion and my awareness of its potential that perpetuates my search."
