Esterio Segura (Cuban, b. 1970). "Los Dragones del Castillo Me Comieron las Partes Mas Sensibles" mixed media: watercolor, India ink, and graphite on paper, 1996. Signature, date, and title handwritten below. A striking mixed media composition by Cuban artist Esterio Segura featuring five dragons with crocodile bodies feasting upon the "sensitive" body parts of a nude male with blood dripping from the open wound located over his heart. Segura always pays special attention to the titles of his works and this piece is no exception. "Los Dragones del Castillo Me Comieron las Partes Mas Sensibles" translates to "The Dragons of the Castle Ate the Most Sensitive Parts of Myself". In Segura's words, "My titles are my thoughts getting concrete; both linked to the structure represented in my drawing but also to a more oral form." Latin American Art expert Darrel Couturier had this to say about the political power and iconography of this piece, "The imagery in Esterio's piece is describing pretty literally what the Cuban government is doing to him as a person and as an artist. The image of the crocodile is often used to symbolize Cuba as the island resembles the shape of the reptile. This work is quite a daring piece as it clearly speaks out about the communist government where challenging authority so directly is risky." One of a kind and politically poignant, Segura's "Los Dragones del Castillo Me Comieron las Partes Mas Sensibles" is mounted in a custom museum-quality frame behind plexiglass. Size (artwork): 48" L x 33" W (121.9 cm x 83.8 cm) Size (frame): 52" L x 37" W (132.1 cm x 94 cm)
