Magna Graecia, southern Italy, near Ignazia, Apulia, ca. 3rd century BCE. A choice and finely preserved Apulian Gnathian kernos, a burial vessel featuring four tightly lidded, interconnected containers, joined with a high arched central handle. Decorated in the distinctive Gnathian polychrome technique, the surface displays geometric linear bands, crosses, and circles in white, yellow, and red over a rich black glaze. This intricate design reflects the skilled artistry of Magna Graecian craftsmen during the Hellenistic period. Kernoi were ritual vessels used for religious and funerary offerings, holding sacred substances such as grains, oils, or perfumes. The presence of multiple chambers suggests a symbolic function, likely representing abundance, fertility, or devotion to deities. This rare piece, with its meticulously preserved structure and vibrant decoration, stands as an outstanding example of its kind. Size: 6.75" Diameter x 4.6" H (17.1 cm x 11.7 cm)
