North Africa, Morocco, Anti-Atlas Mountains, Ordovician period, ca. 478 to 471 million years ago. An exceptional Lannacus trilobite in a stone matrix, the two halves represent the complete concretion with the negative (impression) half. This incredible specimen has been prepared in a Florida lab, which provided a full assessment of the prep work. The entire trilobite has been fully exposed, displaying exceptional and fully natural details. The negative impression further demonstrates the authenticity and originality of the positive half of the concretion. The pygidium (tail) was partly exposed and lightly covered in a fragmented thin layer of the upper concretion which could not be salvaged hence the exposed pygidium upon reassembly of the concretion. When displayed closed, it actually makes for an incredibly intriguing display to show the entire specimen assembled with the tail peeking out one end, revealing to the viewer a hint of what lies inside the concretion! Size of matrix: 8.5" L x 6.5" W (21.6 cm x 16.5 cm); trilobite: 7.75" L (19.7 cm)
Both the positive and negative impressions of this rare specimen are present, with the imprint half of the rock layer intact, which is always reassuring testimony to the age and authenticity of this unique fossil. Quality examples of this trilobite have now become extremely scarce, most on the market are often replicas or heavily restored. The entire trilobite in this example is fully articulated and exhibits the fullest possible, lifelike inflation along with wonderful detail and preservation. The orange coloring is a result of the naturally-occurring limonite pigment and has been sealed for protection. The eyes are both genuine and exhibit full, pronounced anatomical relief. The heavy limestone concretion matrix wonderfully preserved and complete, and the outer surface of the concretion have not been colored or painted and has only been sealed to also preserve this beautiful natural coloring as well as to strengthen and stabilize any fractures in the concretion.
