Classical World, Etruscan, ca. 4th century BCE. An impressive sculptural rendering - most likely a section of an antefix - depicting Silenus (also Silenos and Seilenos or Papposilenus given his older appearance). Silenus was a tutor and companion of Bacchus (Greek Dionysus or Dionysos) who was the deity of wine, wine-making, the grape harvest, and drunkenness. Here he is shown with a characteristically aged face presenting deep-set, partially closed eyes (perhaps indicating his drunken state) beneath raised arched brows (as if trying to stay awake), an upturned bulbous nose, and a bushy mustache - wearing a grape leaf wreath signifying the importance of wine to the cult of Bacchus. A wonderful piece, especially for any oenophiles (wine lovers) out there! Size: 9.5" W x 12" H (24.1 cm x 30.5 cm); 18.875" H (47.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Silenus was the mythical teacher and drinking companion of Bacchus, god of wine, winemaking, and the grape harvest - and furthermore, by virtue of the inebriated state brought about by the ingestion of such fermented libations of the vine, the deity also associated with madness, theatre, and spiritual ecstasy.
The roofs of Etruscan temples were elaborately decorated. This depiction of Silenus was most likely part of an antefix, a mold-made decorative tile positioned at the eaves as well as the central ridge of a roofs in classical architecture. Antefixes stood virtually perpendicular to their adjoining roof tiles, and were oftentimes housed within clam shell shaped plaques that had additional decoration in relief, such as lotus flowers or palmettes. They were also colorfully painted in hues of red, white, blue, and black. Since these architectural ornaments were made with molds, artisans could create series of identical antefixes for an attractive display on the temple’s roof.
