Etruria, northern Italy, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A fine leaded-bronze satyr figure cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, in a dynamic pose as if dancing. The satyr is nude with small genitalia, and short tail, his right leg stepping forward, slightly bent and arms raised. His visage presents with characteristically pointy ears, wide incised eyes, a stubby nose, a linear mouth, all topped by a thick curly coiffure. Rather than a beard, he has a pair of lumps on his chin. This figure is well preserved with a dark green patina and sharp, naturalistic details- note the abdominal muscles as he twists his torso. Size: 2.25" L x 2.6" W x 4.5" H (5.7 cm x 6.6 cm x 11.4 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Satyrs were powerful symbols in ancient times, associated with the joy of the Bacchanal. The consumption of wine was an important social activity and satyrs were oftentimes added to decorative items to signify the owner's affiliation with the cult of Bacchus. Themes of the god and his followers were particularly popular during the early part of this time period, as control of the Mediterranean was shifting from Greece to Rome.
