Luigi Kasimir (Austrian, 1881-1962), "Fulton Market", colored etching, ca. 1936. Estate signed in pencil below the image at lower center. On Luigi Kasimir watermarked wove paper. This wonderful image by Luigi Kasimir captures the excitement of Fulton Market with the fabulous Manhattan skyline in the background. Luigi Kasimir is best known for his etchings of European and American cities as well as landmarks throughout the world. Kasimir was one of the first artists to develop the technique of the colored etching. Prior to this, color was applied to prints in a relatively haphazard manner. However, Kasimir would first create a fine sketch, most often in pastel. Next, he would transfer the design on a fair number of plates - as many as four to six - one after the other - and then apply the color to the plate BY HAND. Size: plate measures 17" L x 11.625" W (43.2 cm x 29.5 cm); sheet measures 24.625" L x 18.875" W (62.5 cm x 47.9 cm)
Established in 1822, the Fulton Fish Market - named for Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan, was the most important wholesale fish market on the East Coast of the US. Fishing boats sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and offloaded their fish from the docks. Wholesalers would then sell it to retailers and restauranteurs. In 2005, the historic market relocated to the Bronx.
