Luigi Kasimir (Austrian, 1881-1962), New York Bowling Green Station, colored etching, dated in plate Nov. 7th 1927. Estate signed in pencil below the image at lower center. On Luigi Kasimir watermarked wove paper. A striking birds eye view of Bowling Green beyond its original fence. Built in 1733, Bowling Green is the oldest public park in New York City. Luigi Kasimir is best known for his etchings of European and American cities as well as landmarks throughout the world. Kasimir was one of the first artists to develop the technique of the colored etching. Prior to this, color was applied to prints in a relatively haphazard manner. However, Kasimir would first create a fine sketch, most often in pastel. Next, he would transfer the design on a fair number of plates - as many as four to six - one after the other - and then apply the color to the plate BY HAND. Size: image measures 17.5" L x 9.875" W (44.4 cm x 25.1 cm); sheet measures 24.75" L x 17.25" W (62.9 cm x 43.8 cm)
