- Lot Description
Native American, Midwest to Southeastern United States, Caddo / Mississippian, ca. 1200 to 1800 CE. An exquisite, hand-built blackware vessel featuring a deep cavity and incised decorations along its exterior. The decoration is of a minimalist aesthetic, with evenly spaced, dot-form incisions along the rim. The vessel is bi-leveled with a stylishly flared upper register - this type of tiered, low bowl form is referred to as a compound vessel and is associated with late phases of Caddo pottery making. Caddoan pottery was the finest produced by the Mississippian cultures, with very thin walls, intricate motifs, and well-proportioned shapes. This is an attractive and elegant design! Size: 8.2" W x 3.25" H (20.8 cm x 8.3 cm).
