Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, ca. 1550 to 1070 BCE. An absolutely incredible cosmetic palette, hand-carved from a warm, creamy brown breccia, with a shallow, leaf-shaped bowl and a handle in the form of a delicate swan's neck, curved down upon itself so that the head rests against its chest. The bird's head is completed by incised outlines around the eyes, which give it a sly, watchful appearance. Palettes in the form of animals - most often fish - are found from the Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom. They were used to mix and apply cosmetics - both men and women in ancient Egyptian society wore cosmetics, most famously black kohl painted around the eyes. Size: 3.55" L x 6.1" W x 1.75" H (9 cm x 15.5 cm x 4.4 cm)
The ancient Egyptian relationship with swans is not fully understood. Statues of the majestic animals have been found in royal tombs, and they possibly had an association with music. Swans flocked to the shores of the Nile Delta in winter when people first began to build cities there, but at some point prior to the New Kingdom, human development and environmental change moved them away from the area. As a result, archaeologists suggest that swans became imbued with symbolic power. Early Egyptians even tried to tame the animals - Ptahhotep II, an official in the Fifth Dynasty, claims in his burial complex that he kept 1225 swans! As a symbol, they perhaps represented help on the journey to the afterlife, as they were known for migrating to distant lands. However, the owner of this graceful vessel may have just admired the swan's beauty.
