East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. ca. 618 to 906 CE. An opulent and quite rare gilt brass crown boasting elaborate openwork imagery of phoenixes amongst scrolling wisps of clouds and flame-like motifs. Four phoenix birds are shown on either side of the diadem, all surrounding auspicious symbols at the center. The dome like interior is formed from several thing sheets of metal and adorned with relief imagery of a lotus flower at the top and additional avian designs on the sides. The striking silhouette of the tiara is created by overlapping thinly hammered ruyi-shaped gilt-brass plates of various heights. Size: 8" L x 12.2" W x 10.3" H (20.3 cm x 31 cm x 26.2 cm); 20.5" H (52.1 cm) on included custom stand; of custom display case: 14.5" L x 20.5" W x 20.75" H (36.8 cm x 52.1 cm x 52.7 cm)

Some areas have been professionally reattached with wire in modern times. Some chipping to brass sheets on interior dome, as well as slight bending and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and excellent with impressive presentation and great remains of gilding.
