Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A hand-carved wooden mummy mask of a tapered triangular form. The countenance exhibits almond-shaped eyes beneath gently curved brows, thin lips, smooth cheeks, a prominent nose, and a broad headdress that rests low on the forehead. The obverse bears remains of the original gesso with areas around the eyes still displaying remains of the black-painted details. Gesso remains on the upper lip, mouth, cheeks, and ears suggest this entire mask was ornately painted with vibrant hues at one time to imbue it with a physiognomy similar to that of the deceased. Four dowel holes on the verso illustrate how this mask would have attached to a larger coffin lid. Size: 6.875" W x 10.8" H (17.5 cm x 27.4 cm); 13.3" H (33.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-estate of Elder Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
