Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1077 BCE. A sizable scarab that is hand-carved from mottled yellow-white steatite with streaky black inclusions. Bearing faint remains of yellow-green glaze in scattered areas, the intricately incised scarab presents with sinuous legs, a folded wing carapace, and a slender head with a frilled frontal clypeus; a suspension hole is drilled lengthwise through the body. Incised on the underside is a pair of highly symbolic creatures: a recumbent gazelle with lengthy horns, and a scaly crocodile with protruding eyes and a slender snout.
