Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Thutmose III, ca. 1479 to 1425 BCE. An attractive rectangular bead carved from yellow-brown steatite set inside a modern electrum setting decorated with oscillating filigree border. The top of the bead exhibits a serrated border as well as two columns containing the cartouche of Thutmose III (also Thotmosis III or Thothmes, meaning "Thoth is born") that consists of the hieroglyphs for a sun disk, a board game, and a scarab, with an additional horizontal striation in the right column. The underside features an additional columnal cartouche flanked by two pairs of wings and traces of the original turquoise glazing that once covered the bead. A wearable example of ancient pharaonic artistry! Condition
Assembled in modern times and wearable as shown. Steatite bead is ancient, and electrum setting and pin are modern. Minor abrasions to bead, with minor softening to some inscribed details and hieroglyphic symbols, and fading to original glazing, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice traces of original glaze color on underside of bead. Cartouche hieroglyphs are still legible.
