Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 1292 CE. An impressive faience figure of Tawaret (also Taweret, Tauret, Apet, Opet), the goddess of child birthing and suckling as well as a protector of women, children, and the weak. Tawaret's composite form is defined with the feet of a lioness, the spine and tail of a crocodile, the breasts and bulging belly of a pregnant woman, and the head of a hippopotamus. This hybrid creature combines the elements of dangerous and fertile creatures, perfect for a goddess that was meant to protect women and their children. In front of her legs is a pair of sa-symbols, protective loops that were also used as hieroglyphs to write the word for "protection" and for "amulet." The ancient deity is crowned by a discoid headdress and enveloped in a blue-green pigment representative of the fertility of the Nile. Size: 1.3" L x 0.8" W x 3" H (3.3 cm x 2 cm x 7.6 cm)
