Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Greco-Roman periods, ca. 712 to 30 BCE. A remarkable wood companion statue standing in mummiform position on an integral plinth and finely gessoed and painted in hues of black, white, and red. Wearing a tripartite wig, the figure gazes forward from elongated eyes beneath slender brows and displays a beardless visage with a naturalistic nose and a closed mouth. The body is embellished by layered collars of teardrop designs that surround the neck while a goddess with outstretched wings - either Isis or Nut - sits just below. A lengthy column of hieroglyphs extends beneath the deity as additional hieroglyphs are placed atop each of her hands. A cavity at the top of the figure's head would have served as an insert for a headdress. Size: 3" W x 14" H (7.6 cm x 35.6 cm); 14.7" H (37.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Though companion statues resemble sculptures of Ptah Sokar Osiris, they differ in their inclusion of a winged goddess at their midsection. Similar companion statues that also display a winged goddess can be found at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston under accession numbers 2000.564.A-.C and 2000.563.A-.C.
