Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 29th to 30th Dynasty, ca. 398 to 343 BCE. A remarkable cartonnage panel of rectangular form adorned with painted gesso in hues of teal, crimson, beige, yellow ochre, black, and white. The upper section depicts a scene of Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead and the process of embalming, with his characteristic jackal-form head as he tends to the body of the deceased. The deity is surrounded by a lovely border of horizontal and vertical striations as he stands in profile above a recumbent body that lies on a feline-form bed. Two columns, each comprised of three registers, decorate the area below Anubis. Each register contains a lone figure, possibly representing Egyptian deities, all separated by rows of circles. Accompanied by a lovely maroon box with a velvet pad at its bottom. Size: 4.25" W x 14.75" H (10.8 cm x 37.5 cm); Size of custom box: 8.25" W x 14.75" H (21 cm x 37.5 cm)
Anubis was the god of the necropolis and of embalming. This said, his tasks included not only attending to the mummy but also destroying all enemies of Osiris, to assist during a ritual called "Opening of the Mouth" before the funeral, or in general to ensure a good burial as well as offerings. The Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts add that Anubis was responsible for counting the hearts. He also took part in the judgment of the dead, where he could be seen leading the deceased to the scales on which the heart would be weighed and subsequently towards Osiris (vignette for spell 125 of the Book of the Dead). Because of this last task as "escort of souls" he was equated with Hermes in Graeco-Roman times.

Condition
Aperture to side. A few pieces of panel without gesso or pigment are detached. Fraying to peripheries and some losses to paint and gesso. Repair to small areas on Anubis at left side and feet, with restored pigment. Otherwise, excellent with impressive remaining pigments.
