Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A mold-formed faience figure depicting Pataikos, the bow-legged dwarf god meant as a protector deity and a mitigator of violent natural forces. The squat figure stands nude with thick legs bearing a vertical central cleft and holds both hands to his protruding hips. His head showcases almond-shaped eyes, an upturned nose, puffy cheeks, cupped ears, and full lips beneath his bulging, slightly plateaued forehead, and a perforated suspension loop behind the neck bears four vertical striations. Remains of blue-green glaze are visible across the figure and make for an attractive presentation. Size: 1.375" W x 3.1" H (3.5 cm x 7.9 cm)
