Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1187 BCE. A beautifully preserved mudbrick fresco depicting a processional scene, characteristic of New Kingdom religious and funerary art. Although fragementary, the white garment and red umber-toned skin of a seated figure are visible - one arm extended across the body in an offering gesture. The wrist adorned with a bracelet cuff presents a bouquet of lotus and Nymphaea (water lily) buds and leaves, bound with mandrake fruits - all symbols of purity, rebirth, and eternal life in Egyptian culture. Much like today, floral bouquets were essential in religious ceremonies and temple decorations, creating an atmosphere rich with color and fragrance. Size: 5.25" W x 5.625" H (13.3 cm x 14.3 cm)
In ancient Egypt, blue lotus, mandrake fruits and other flowers were sometimes combined in rituals, likely creating a drink with psychoactive effects such as euphoria and hallucinations. The blue lotus, known for its calming and aphrodisiac properties, contains alkaloids that can induce these effects at high doses, and it was frequently depicted in Egyptian art. Mandrake and poppy flowers, often used alongside blue lotus, were also part of these ritualistic practices, with blue lilies being integral in both ceremonial and funerary contexts.
