Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet of the dwarf god Pataikos covered in faint layers of green, blue-green, and yellow-green glaze. The petite Pataikos god stands atop stunted, bowed legs and holds both hands atop his chest with bent index fingers touching and both thumbs raised towards his clavicle in a sign of protection. His countenance presents almond-shaped eyes and a broad nose, but the most notable features are a scarab atop his head as well as a lock of hair - known as the lock of Harpocrates or the side lock of youth - projecting from the right side of his head. An intriguing figural amulet from ancient Egypt! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 1.25" W x 2.625" H (3.2 cm x 6.7 cm)
For another example of Pataikos with a side lock of youth, please see The Walters Art Museum, accession number 48.1606.
