Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1292 to 1077 BCE. A gorgeous scarab pendant of ovoid form that is hand-carved from warm vermilion-hued carnelian. The topside presents a trapezoidal head with a frilled clypeus, a folded wing carapace, and sinuous legs tucked beneath the bulky body, all above a drilled suspension hole. The underside features an unusual cartouche that appears to contain only an abstract seated figure within its frame, which itself is flanked by 4 projecting tendrils. Nevertheless, this is a unique piece of Egyptian artistry! Size: 0.6" L x 0.43" W (1.5 cm x 1.1 cm)
Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896
