Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A solid-cast leaded-bronze figure depicting Amun, one of the 8 primeval gods known as a god of air and water as well as the source from which all things originated. Amun presents in a striding pose atop an integral rectangular plinth, his left foot forward, while his left arm is raised to hold a scepter or staff. He wears an incised, belted shendyt skirt around his waist as well as a false beard attached via a chinstrap on his face. His visage exhibits puffy features and generously-lidded eyes with elongated exterior canthi, and atop his head is a conical crown bearing a lateral groove meant to hold a pair of tall, conjoined feathers. Size: 2.5" L x 1.625" W x 5.3" H (6.4 cm x 4.1 cm x 13.5 cm); 7.125" H (18.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Amun is one of the oldest and equally most mysterious deities in Egyptian mythology. Amun, according to Egyptologist Garry J. Shaw, "…was by 1200 BC[E] of unparalleled importance in Egyptian state religion, so much so that the Ogdoad of Hermopolis was now regarded as the first development of his own majestic hidden power. The Egyptians depicted Amun as a man with blue skin, wearing a crown of two tall feathered plumes. His title 'the Great Honker' demonstrates his association with the goose, the bird who broke the silence at the beginning of time with his honking; and he could also be shown as a ram - a symbol of fertility." Shaw also explains how, "In the Middle Kingdom (2066-1780 BC[E]), Amun rose to prominence in the Theban region, and in the New Kingdom (1549-1069 BC[E]) reigned supreme as ultimate deity, referred to as King of the Gods. Representing all that was hidden, Amun existed within and beyond Nun, transcendent, invisible, behind all things, in existence before the gods of creation, and self-created. He 'knit his fluid together with his body to bring about his egg in isolation', we are told, and was 'creator of his [own] perfection." (Shaw, Garry J. "The Egyptian Myths: A Guide to the Ancient Gods and Legends." Thames & Hudson, London, 2014, pp. 21-24)
