Edwin Bale (British, 1842-1923). "Still Life with Grapes and Oranges" oil on canvas, 19th century. Signed at lower right. A stunning still life by British artist Edwin Bale. The composition features a ceramic vase surrounded by clusters of green and red grapes as well as luscious oranges placed upon a wooden table, all delineated close to the picture plane. Note how several grape leaves as well as a lone orange peel protrude beyond the table's edge thus emphasizing the artist's execution of trompe l'oeil. In addition, Bale employs a dynamic color palette replete with shades of spring green, vibrant orange, cornflower blue, and magenta tempered by quiet neutrals. Finally, Bale's marvelous command of light and shadow imbues the painting with a touch of drama. An outstanding painting by Edwin Bale mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (painting): 14.1" L x 18" W (35.8 cm x 45.7 cm) Size (frame): 18.625" L x 22.625" W (47.3 cm x 57.5 cm)
