Eastern Greece, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A terracotta corner from a coffin or similar large square-cornered item. Painted on the corner is the figure of a man with a diadem or crown decorated with three large pendants. He has a huge beard that falls to mid chest, dark hair and eyebrows, large, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and a wide mouth. His clothing is decorated with circles identical to his pendants. He is painted so that his face is split down the middle by the corner of the coffin. This coffin piece likely came from Klazomenai (Clazomenai) or Old Smyrna, both of which were in the eastern part of Greece at the time (today, coastal western Turkey). The Klazomenai terracotta sarcophagi represent a mythologically rich painting tradition. Size: 6.75" L x 7" W x 13.75" H (17.1 cm x 17.8 cm x 34.9 cm); 14.3" H (36.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Who is this figure? Similar known coffins bear the image of gorgons, centaurs, satyrs, griffins, sphinxes, and sirens, all made to protect the body and soul of the dead. It seems that the corner figures were also considered guardians who would not allow the dead to pass beyond their bounds to haunt the living. They also signified the wealth and status of the person laid to rest within its walls. Most of what remains from these coffins - which were made in several parts in large kilns - are their rims. Finding a corner piece is much more rare. Fascinatingly, and in strong contrast to other parts of Archaic and Classical Greece, people were not buried with grave goods - instead these coffins, which must have been ordered before death, with the living choosing painted themes of importance to them, served as their only lasting monument.
