Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. second quarter of the 20th century CE. A lovely armor vest known as a sa'dan (literally "war suit") with braided rattan fibers forming the overall profile. The exterior surfaces are lined with dozens of rectangular mail panels carved from ox bone, and the front bearing six layered buttons with wooden 'teeth' pendants knotted to the tie strings. Six large roundels are fastened to the vest and act as magical amulets for warding against enemy attacks and evil magic. Accompanying the vest is a domed helmet woven from rattan fibers lined with dozens of rectangular wooden panels. The top of the helmet has a circular roundel atop 8 additional wooden panels to protect the wearer from strikes coming from above.
