Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A large and lovely ancestor mask, hand-carved from hard wood, with an expressive tribal visage. The elongated mask displays a pair of ovoid eyes with drilled pupils which flank the top of an enormous curved nose accentuated with additional red pigment. Contoured, orange-painted cheeks droop downwards towards a black-hued mouth and chin, forming a dark "beard" around the petite mouth. A triangular brow line is painted in similar black pigment and terminates in a small, perforated crest perhaps meant for additional ornamentation. A periphery of segmented triangular notches are carved from ear to ear along the cheeks and chin with a row of perforations behind to which a larger textile costume can be secured. Representative of an ancestral figure, this is a wonderful example from Papua New Guinea! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 9.7" W x 24.25" H (24.6 cm x 61.6 cm); 28.5" H (72.4 cm) on included custom stand.
