Middle East, Persia (Iran), ca. early 20th century CE. A decorative steel helmet presenting a classic pointed hemispheric form with chain mail mesh suspended from loops all the way around, the section above the wearer's eyes conveniently shorter to allow for visibility. The surfaces of the dome and lower section of the finial are adorned with diagonal bands of flowering vines; around the lower rim are fanciful calligraphic characters; the finial presents leafy tendrils. Two leaf-shaped sockets are attached to the front of the head, once used to hold feathers or a similar flourish. A decorative nose guard with openwork upper and lower ends is fitted between the sockets. More than 50% of the decorative motifs are finished with copper leaf. Below the band of characters at the base of the helmet are tiny perforations to attach chain mail. The interior is lined with quilted fabric for comfort. Size: 9.25" W x 10.625" H (23.5 cm x 27 cm); 16.6" H (42.2 cm) on included custom stand; 20" H (50.8 cm) including chain mail.
See another Persian helmet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/25031. About it, the curatorial staff writes, "Despite the modernization of Iran’s military in the nineteenth century, traditional armor continued to be manufactured. Its purpose, however, is uncertain: for military parades, as costume for religious or historical plays, or as romantic souvenirs for the tourist trade."

Condition
Missing a few loops to the chain mail row that attaches to the helmet. Chain mail was reattached askew so that the nose guard is off center; possibly originally from a different piece but still ancient. Slight surface wear commensurate with age, but the motifs are still vivid. Gorgeous warm, glowing patina to helmet form and chain mail.
