Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large and lovely ancestor mask, hand-carved from hard wood, with an expressive tribal visage. The elongated mask displays a pair of ovoid eyes with circular pupils which flank the top of an enormous curved nose. Contoured cheeks droop downwards towards strands of carved linear and triangular details, forming a detailed "mustache" above its petite mouth. A triangular brow is painted in black while the rest of the mask bears a deep ruby-red hue. Several strips of modern water-proof tarpaulin material adorn the top of the mask in blue and orange, secured to the top rectangular protrusion, giving the face a colorful accent. A row of perforations line the peripheral rim of the mask, allowing for the suspension of a large textile costume. Representative of an ancestral figure, this is a wonderful example from Papua New Guinea! Size: 11" W x 27.5" H (27.9 cm x 69.8 cm); 30" H (76.2 cm) on included custom stand.
