Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kongo Kingdom, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful hand-carved wood figure standing atop an integral plinth. The fascinating figure displays thick legs, a bulbous posterior, a slender waist, square shoulders, and a huge, bald head. His thin arms hang to his sides with his hands encompassing his navel, which is embellished by a translucent yellow glass inlay. Enveloped in a lustrous burnish, the intriguing figure exhibits a stylized visage composed of a large mouth, a round nose, and glass eyes, all flanked by a pair of high-set ears. Size: 1.9" W x 6.5" H (4.8 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Stable fissure to plinth. Missing right eye glass inlay. Otherwise, excellent with light earthen deposits and nice patina.
