Southeast Asia, Indonesia, West Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Dayak, ca. early 20th century CE. A sizeable and stunning hampatong, or ancestor figure, skillfully hand-carved from a single piece of wood to depict a standing ancestor figure holding a lizard. The towering figure stands nude on a circular plinth displaying a lengthy, slender body, square shoulders, and a sizeable head with incised, target-motif eyes beneath an arched brow, a risen nasal bridge, a triangular nose, and an open mouth with an extending tongue, all flanked by a petite pair of ears. His tongue extends all the way down to the nose of the lizard he holds, who seemingly crawls up his body. A pair of avian creatures stands between his legs, one facing to the front and the other to the back, while a third bird sits atop his head with its beak pointed downwards, as though pecking at his skull. An additional lizard or alligator-like animal crawls up his back. Size: 8.75" L x 8.25" W x 54.5" H (22.2 cm x 21 cm x 138.4 cm); 55.5" H (141 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Several stable pressure fissures commensurate with age. Loss to verso of base. Expected surface wear with nicks, chips, and abrasions. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina.
