Native American, North America, United States, Arizona, Grand Canyon, Hopi peoples, ca. 1905 to 1907 CE. Attributed to Nampeyo of Hano (Hopi-Tewa, 1856 to 1942). Fred Harvey Hopi House Company collection label for Nampeyo and her family's pottery inscribed with the year "1915" on base. A beautiful Hopi jar resembling a pillow and featuring a square form with a rounded base and slanted shoulders that rise to an annular rim, all enveloped in a burnt orange glaze. The shoulder is adorned with a black-painted fret motif - a design frequently used by Nampeyo - flanked by 3 concentric squares surrounding the rim and an additional square around the shoulder. The unusual form of the vessel - a variation of the canteen and the jar form - was intended to prove the artist's advanced skill rather than serve for any particular use, giving the example a unique charm! Size: 3.25" W x 2.5" H (8.3 cm x 6.4 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
This eccentric square jar is an excellent example of the ceramics Nampeyo was making while demonstrating at the Fred Harvey Hopi House on the edge of the Grand Canyon in 1905 and 1907, before the canyon was a national park. During this period, the Fred Harvey Company developed a label to put on Nampeyo's pottery, which read "From the Hopi Villages," which can be found on the base of this vessel, along with the date 1915. Although the date is later than when Nampeyo demonstrated at the Canyon, the Fred Harvey Company continued selling her work there for years.
