Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Haida or Tlingit, ca. early 20th century CE. An intricate hand-carved walrus tusk ivory totem pole of an eagle perched atop a bear, with an upturned snout and bared teeth. The bear crouches with an anthropomorphic figure between his front paws, and the incised details are highlighted with black and red pigments. The totem verso is flat, showing off the interior tusk dentin layer, and the bird's wings are attached separately. Every totem contains a special symbol or story specific to the tribe or clan. This totem represents the relationship between bears and humans, in which the eagle also plays a role. Size: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
To the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, the Thunderbird represents power, strength, and protection. The Tlingit believe he can transform from avian to human by removing his head like a mask and removing his feathers like a blanket. The bear is oftentimes embraced as a medicine bear with magical healing powers; the bear also symbolizes courage, strength, health, and family. In addition, the bear is regarded as the ultimate protector of the animal kingdom. The Haida culture refers to the bear as their "Elder Kinsman;" hence, the animal was traditionally treated like an elite guest when killed. To demonstrate respect, eagle down feathers were sprinkled before it was brought to the tribe.
