Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. A gorgeous hand-carved wooden lion mask for festival use. The face is elongated with a lengthy snout and squared jaws at the bottom with bared teeth. Narrow grooves beside the nose indicate the whiskers, and the eyes are slit-formed into diamond shapes under the brow. The ears perk straight up from the front of the forehead, and rows of incised striations create his flowing mane. The surface is hand-painted with red pigments, perhaps marker ink, to highlight the majestic visage. Size: 12" L x 7.125" W (30.5 cm x 18.1 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990
