South America, Ecuador, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful and wearable necklace comprised of glass beads and vintage Ecuadorian centavo coins. The necklace is comprised of 4 strands strung with dozens of petite spherical glass beads. Along each strand are centavos coins of denominations in 2.5, 5, and 10, all comprised of a copper nickel alloy, and minted with the years 1918, 1928, and 1946. The strands terminate at a braided length of cotton cord that can be tied and adjusted to accommodate the wearer's size. The glass beads symbolize red coral, a sign of wealth. The addition of literal coins enhances this perceived wealth and prosperity. This is a wearable piece that is vibrant and interesting accessory! Size of necklace: 26" L (66 cm); largest coin: 0.8" Diameter (2 cm)

Condition
Minor nicks and mineral deposits on glass beads. Coins have nice toning and patina. Some bending and abrasions. Multiple holes in several coins suggest they were repurposed from another piece. Necklace is wearable, but note: the necklace is worn by knotting the ends, a professional jeweler could add a clasp to make wearing easier.
