East Asia, southern China, Miao people, ca. early 20th century CE. A pair of striking silver necklaces (ranging between 73-76% pure silver, with copper making up the rest of the alloy). They are of identical form, with one about 33% larger than the other. Each is made of a silver band that tapers at its ends. The center of each is incredibly thick, twisted into a spiral with deeply incised lines that give it the appearance of being made from multiple strands of silver wound together. This twisted area is about half of the width of each necklace. The terminals are coiled into tight spirals that face each other, leaving an opening to allow each necklace to be worn. Size of largest: 9.5" W x 13.95" H (24.1 cm x 35.4 cm); 16.2" H (41.1 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: approximately 73-76%; total weight together is 2.99 kilograms
The Miao, one of the largest ethnic minorities in southwestern China, live in a mountainous region drained by several large rivers. Miao women are known for their elaborate silver jewelry, worn at festivals and weddings - with a single woman wearing dozens of pieces: bracelets, rings, anklets, necklaces, belts… with some individual pieces weighing over a kilogram! Fascinatingly, the region the Miao are from has no natural silver deposits, and prior to the 1950s - so during the time when this pair was made - people melted down silver coins, ingots, and other silver items they had to make the jewelry, creating variability in the silver alloys.
