American untitled oil on canvas, early 1930s. A delightful painting of an atmospheric seascape depicting a ship sailing on tempest tossed wavy waters in the moonlight. Waters agitate the vessel as fresh breezes fill its leaning masts. The soft pearly white skies lit by the moon at the upper right dramatically contrast with the deep cerulean blue ocean below. A handwritten inscription on the back of the canvas reads, "Painted by Mrs. Eason - given to Cal & Rachel for wedding present Sept. 1, 1934." The frame has a J.F. Cabot and Brothers label; though this label is a bit torn and incomplete, comparable J.F. Cabot and Brothers labels read, "J.F. Cabot and Brothers Pictures and Frames, Old engravings bleached. Old paintings cleaned and repaired. Special attention paid to regilding old frames. 89 Sudbury Street, Boston." This suggests that the painting may have a connection with New England. Perhaps we are looking at a view of Boston Harbor! Size: 24" W x 16" H (61 cm x 40.6 cm); 28.625" W x 20.75" H (72.7 cm x 52.7 cm) with frame.
