South America, Brazil, Wayana / Aparai peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a fascinating woven vegetal mask known as a Tamok uputpe, literally meaning "head of Tamok," that not only covers the face, but the back and top of the wearer with strips of backcloth. The face panel is formed from denser palm fronds woven tightly - using basketry techniques in a flat triangular shape - the chin jutting downwards and all painted red with white curvilinear patterns, protruding nose, and holes carved from the wearer to see through the eyes. Grassy tassels attached to the chin area and peripheries dangle loosely to the sides and woven along the top edge like a cap for wearing. These bark cloth strips are lengthy, long enough to touch the ground on this tall stand! This mask was used for the Pono Dance ceremony to purify the village, and represents Tamok, a malevolent demon spirit that embodies illness and death! Size: 8" W x 18" H (20.3 cm x 45.7 cm); 60.5" H (153.7 cm) on included custom stand.
The Wayana and Aparai people were once 2 very distinct groups living in proximity, but displacement and dwindling population has led to these two cultures to come together resulting in a comingle of their traditions and rituals. The Pono dance is observed by both peoples, a celebration to dedicate a new community house and expel evil spirits from the village. Those who are pure of body and alcohol may wear these Tamok masks and costumes.
