Southeast Africa, Tanzania, Zigua people, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine hand-carved wood female figure standing atop broad legs with a portly abdomen and short arms that lay to either side of her petite, round breasts. The lovely figure's bulbous head sits atop her square shoulders, presenting a stylized visage of white, shell inlay eyes, a triangular nose with incised nostrils, prominent nasolabial folds, and an open mouth, all flanked by 2 concave ears. Though nude, the fascinating female is adorned by a slender braided ring of rattan fiber that sits just above her clearly delineated genitalia, as well as a strand of red, white, orange, blue, and black glass beads that circles her thick neck. The attractive sculpture is additionally embellished by a lustrous burnish atop a smooth, espresso-hued surface. Size: 2.875" W x 7.875" H (7.3 cm x 20 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.
