West Africa, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast, Senufo, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A splendid, hand-carved wood figure of a nude female shown seated atop a 4-legged stool. Capped by a crested coiffure, the fascinating lady presents short legs, wide hips, pointed breasts, square shoulders, and thick arms that both bend at the elbows to rest beside her bulbous stomach. Her stylized visage is composed of a protruding chin, a straight mouth, a petite nose, huge, semi-circular eyes, and an arched brow, all flanked by a pair of prominent ears. Striations of scarification line the cheeks of her face and buttocks, while a globular knob projects from the front of her crescent-shaped hairstyle. Size: 3" W x 9.75" H (7.6 cm x 24.8 cm)
